Leading an assault against heavily fortified French positions, he charged fearlessly toward the enemy despite intense artillery and musket fire. During the attack, his horse was struck and fell beneath him. Without hesitation, Capois rose to his feet, drew his sword, and continued advancing on foot while encouraging his soldiers to press forward.
Witnessing this extraordinary display of courage, the French commander, General Donatien de Rochambeau, reportedly ordered a temporary ceasefire so that he could salute Capois’ bravery. According to long-standing historical accounts, Rochambeau sent an officer to congratulate him with the famous words:
“The Captain General sends his compliments to the General who has just covered himself with glory.”
This remarkable moment stands as one of the rare instances in military history in which an opposing commander publicly honored the courage of an enemy during battle.
From that day forward, François Capois became known forever as “Capois-La-Mort”—the man who seemed to defy death itself.
